Preventing and Managing Pet Obesity

Excess weight is one of the most common health problems in pets. It can contribute to joint pain, diabetes, breathing difficulties, and a shorter lifespan.

How to Tell if Your Pet Is Overweight

You should be able to feel your pet’s ribs under a thin layer of fat, and see a visible waist when looking from above. If not, your pet may be carrying extra weight. Your veterinarian can score your pet’s body condition accurately.

Measure Meals

Use a measuring cup or kitchen scale instead of guessing. Small overfeeding mistakes add up quickly, especially for small dogs and cats.

Count the Treats

Treats should make up only a small portion of daily calories. Consider using low-calorie options such as small pieces of vegetables that are safe for pets, or part of the regular kibble.

Increase Activity Gradually

Daily walks, play sessions, and puzzle feeders help burn calories and provide mental stimulation. For cats, interactive toys and climbing furniture encourage movement.

Avoid Crash Diets

Rapid weight loss can be harmful, particularly for cats. Work with your veterinarian on a safe, gradual plan and schedule regular weigh-ins.
