Sharing a bite from your plate may seem harmless, but several everyday foods can be dangerous for pets. Knowing which ones to avoid can prevent an emergency.
Chocolate and Caffeine
Chocolate contains theobromine, which dogs and cats process poorly. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially risky. Coffee and tea can also be harmful.
Grapes and Raisins
Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs. Even small amounts should be treated as a risk.
Onions, Garlic, and Chives
These foods can damage red blood cells and lead to anemia. This applies to raw, cooked, and powdered forms.
Xylitol
Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in some gum, candy, baked goods, and peanut butter. It can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver damage in dogs. Always check labels before sharing.
Alcohol and Raw Dough
Alcohol is toxic to pets, and raw yeast dough can expand in the stomach and produce alcohol as it ferments.
Macadamia Nuts
These nuts can cause weakness, vomiting, and tremors in dogs.
What to Do in an Emergency
If your pet eats something toxic, contact your veterinarian or a local animal poison control service immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear, and do not induce vomiting unless a professional tells you to.
