Itchy skin is one of the top reasons owners take pets to the veterinarian. Persistent scratching, licking, and chewing can lead to hair loss, infections, and a very uncomfortable animal.
Common Causes
Skin problems have many triggers: flea allergy, environmental allergies to pollen or dust mites, food sensitivities, bacterial or yeast infections, mites, and fungal conditions such as ringworm. Because symptoms overlap, identifying the cause usually requires a veterinary exam.
Signs to Watch For
Look for redness, flaky skin, a greasy or smelly coat, patchy hair loss, scabs, recurring ear infections, and paw licking. Cats may over-groom or develop small crusty bumps.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Your veterinarian may perform skin scrapings, cytology, or an elimination diet trial to pinpoint the cause. Treatment can include medicated shampoos, parasite control, allergy management, and addressing secondary infections. Allergies are often managed long term rather than cured.
Supporting Healthy Skin at Home
Brush regularly, bathe only with pet-appropriate shampoos at the frequency your vet recommends, keep up with flea prevention, and wash bedding often. A balanced diet supports coat and skin health too.
If your pet is scratching constantly or has open sores, avoid home remedies and seek veterinary advice so the underlying cause can be treated properly.
