Understanding Pet Food Allergies and Sensitivities

If your pet is constantly scratching, licking its paws, or suffering from an upset stomach, food could be a factor. However, true food allergies are less common than many owners think, so a proper diagnosis is important.

Allergy vs. Intolerance

A food allergy involves the immune system and often causes itchy skin, ear infections, or digestive problems. A food intolerance does not involve the immune system but can still cause vomiting or diarrhea.

Common Triggers

In dogs and cats, the most frequently reported triggers are proteins such as beef, dairy, chicken, and fish. Grains are less commonly the cause than many marketing claims suggest.

The Elimination Diet

The most reliable way to diagnose a food allergy is a strict elimination diet that lasts around eight to twelve weeks. This uses a novel or hydrolyzed protein recommended by your vet. During this time, no other treats, flavored medications, or table scraps should be given.

Why Home Testing Kits Fall Short

Saliva or hair-based allergy tests sold online have not been shown to be reliable for diagnosing food allergies. Rely on your veterinarian’s guidance instead.

Long-Term Management

Once a trigger is identified, avoiding it consistently usually controls symptoms. Read ingredient labels carefully, since treats and supplements can contain hidden ingredients.
