Pet Obesity: How to Tell If Your Pet Is Overweight and What to Do

Extra weight is one of the most widespread and preventable health problems in pets. Overweight animals face higher risks of diabetes, arthritis, breathing difficulties, heart disease and a shorter lifespan. The good news is that gradual weight loss can dramatically improve quality of life.

Is My Pet Overweight?

Look and feel rather than relying on the scale alone. You should be able to feel your pet’s ribs easily under a thin layer of fat, see a visible waist when looking from above, and notice an abdominal tuck when viewed from the side. If you cannot feel the ribs or your pet has a rounded, barrel-like shape, it is time to talk to your vet. Many clinics use a body condition score from 1 to 9, where 4 to 5 is ideal.

Why Pets Gain Weight

  • Overfeeding and generous treat portions
  • Free feeding instead of measured meals
  • Lack of exercise, particularly in indoor cats
  • Neutering, which can lower energy needs if food is not adjusted
  • Medical causes such as hypothyroidism or Cushing’s disease

Safe Weight Loss Strategies

  • Measure meals. Use a kitchen scale or a proper measuring cup instead of guessing.
  • Cap treats. Treats should make up no more than about 10 percent of daily calories. Try green beans or small pieces of carrot for dogs as low-calorie rewards.
  • Use a veterinary weight-management diet when recommended, since these are designed to help pets feel full while meeting nutrient needs.
  • Add activity. Extra walks, fetch and play sessions for dogs, and wand toys or climbing trees for cats.
  • Re-weigh every few weeks. Aim for slow, steady loss. Rapid weight loss, especially in cats, can cause serious liver problems.

The Whole Household Matters

Make sure everyone feeds your pet according to the plan. Small extras from multiple family members can quickly undo progress.

Check with your veterinarian before changing your pet’s diet or starting a weight-loss program.
