  • Fleas, Ticks, and Worms: A Guide to Parasite Prevention

Parasites are more than a nuisance. Fleas, ticks, and worms can cause anemia, skin disease, and serious infections, and some can even spread to people.

    Fleas

Fleas cause intense itching and can trigger allergic skin reactions. They also carry tapeworm larvae. Treat all pets in the household, and wash bedding in hot water, since most of the flea population lives in the environment rather than on your pet.

    Ticks

Ticks can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis. Check your pet after outdoor adventures, focusing on the ears, neck, armpits, and between the toes. Remove ticks promptly with fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool.

    Intestinal Worms

Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms are common. Puppies and kittens are often born with roundworms, so early deworming is typical. Regular fecal tests help your vet detect infections.

    Heartworm

Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes and can be fatal. Monthly preventives are widely used in areas where heartworm occurs, and are far easier than treating an infection.

    Choose Safe Products

Never use a dog flea product on a cat unless the label says it is safe. Some dog products contain ingredients that are highly toxic to cats. Ask your veterinarian to recommend a prevention plan for your pet.
