Bathing your dog at home saves money, strengthens your bond, and lets you check your pet’s skin and coat up close. With a little preparation, bath time can be calm and even enjoyable for both of you.
Gather Your Supplies First
Before the dog gets wet, set out everything you need: a dog-specific shampoo, a non-slip mat, several towels, a cup or handheld sprayer, a brush, and a few treats. Never use human shampoo, because a dog’s skin has a different pH and can become dry or irritated.
Brush Before You Bathe
Brush out tangles and loose fur before the bath. Water tightens mats, making them much harder to remove later. For long-haired breeds, work through the coat section by section until the comb moves through smoothly.
The Bathing Process
- Use lukewarm water. Water that is too hot or cold will make your dog uncomfortable.
- Wet the coat thoroughly, starting at the neck and working back. Avoid spraying directly into the face.
- Lather gently. Massage shampoo down to the skin, paying attention to the chest, belly, legs, and paws.
- Rinse completely. Leftover shampoo is a common cause of itching and flaky skin, so keep rinsing until the water runs clear.
Protect the Ears and Eyes
Keep water out of the ears by using a damp washcloth to clean the face instead of pouring water over the head. Some owners place a small cotton ball at the ear opening, but be sure to remove it afterward.
Drying and Finishing Up
Towel dry thoroughly, then use a blow dryer on a low, cool setting if your dog tolerates it. Damp fur left in cool conditions can lead to skin problems. Finish with a final brush and plenty of praise.
How Often Should You Bathe?
Most healthy dogs do well with a bath every four to eight weeks, though active dogs or those with skin conditions may need a different schedule. Ask your veterinarian before changing the routine, since over-bathing can strip natural oils from the coat.
A positive experience matters more than a perfect result. Keep sessions calm, reward good behavior, and your dog will learn to see baths as just another part of the routine.
