A Brief Guide on Caring for Hedgehogs

Some people have cats and dogs, but others like something more unique and extraordinary. If you’re one of them, you may be interested in getting a hedgehog. Here’s a brief guide on the animal:

Popular Species

The African Pygmy is the most popular species. It’s 6-11 inches long and weighs 18-25 ounces. The animal comes from the savannas and grassy areas of West, Central, and East Africa.

It’s a great pet to have since it’s quiet, entertaining, and low-maintenance. It prefers to be left alone, and, aside from gentle and frequent handling, you don’t have to do much to gain its affection.

The common hedgehog, which hails from Europe, particularly Iberia, Italy, and Scandinavia, is another option. It’s dark brown, though you can find some with lighter colors.

Habits

Hedgehogs are nocturnal. In the wild, they like to sleep during the day and forage for food at night. Keep this habit in mind when you have one as a pet. They’re also solitary creatures, meaning they can become aggressive if they feel threatened.

These animals are small, especially compared to humans. And, they may feel wary if they’re in a new environment. Be gentle and careful when handling them, so you don’t scare them away.

Needs

Each individual animal has its specific needs. They vary depending on their health, age, and environment.

Here are some general guidelines for hedgehogs:

  • Environment – Despite their small size, hedgehogs are active; you can’t keep them locked in a tiny cage all day. They need space to roam around and play. When you buy one as a pet, make sure you have a large enclosure for them to use. And, put a box inside so they can have a place to hide and sleep in.
  • Food – Feed them 1-2 times per day. If you’re not sure how to do it, don’t worry; it’s not a complicated ritual. Just leave their food outside their hiding box and wait for them to come to it. Hedgehogs prefer insects and worms, but it’s okay to feed them minced rice, meat, or low-fat cat or dog food. But, remember not to overdo it. Don’t give them too much, or they may develop health issues.
  • Medical Care – The most immediate thing to watch out for is fleas. Check through their spines regularly and make sure there aren’t any. If there are, apply a deterrent as soon as possible. These animals can also get diarrhea, worms, and pneumonia. They may develop liver problems, heart conditions, and cancer as well.

If you think your pet is ill or exhibiting strange behavior, take them to an affordable animal hospital in Jacksonville immediately. An animal doctor can check them, administer medicine, and give you recommendations on how to better care for them.
